Weird Recurring Dream

| 5 Comments | 1 TrackBack

I've been having this weird recurring dream over the last couple months, and I can't even begin to understand the significance of it (and I'm sure there's some readers who are into that whole "your dreams tell everything about you" line of thought but I don't really buy it).

The basic premise is always the same, although the details change from occurrence to occurrence:

  • It's night
  • I'm in an environment like Manhattan
  • Except there's like no population
  • I've just decided not to take "my date" (a faceless entity in the dreams) to "the dance", but we instead decide to hang out
  • Part of this includes going across the street to what is either a bazaar, or a hot dog shop, and ordering up some dogs
  • While coming home I notice, "Oh, hey, the werewolf is out and about" as I see him down the city street
  • I go back inside
  • Some quantity of panicking and/or hiding occurs by the occupants of the house/apartment
  • I wake up

Now, seriously. I have no idea what that means, but given that I've had it like a half-dozen or so times, that's a bit odd. I mean there's other dreams I've had even more frequently, but, well... er... at least I understand the motivation behind those dreams. :-P

Ah, well, not looking for answers, just looking to document for posterity, so when it drives me insane, I can point out exactly how long it's been going on for. :-)

How big are the hot dogs in the dream?

Oh, that old one?
Man, that's easy.
Nighttime means that you're feeling somewhat isolated and in a moderately threatening environment. The city aspect means that you're feeling tense. The lack of population means that although alien, it's not threatening. Your faceless date is your longing for companionship (i'd note that this does not neccessarily mean female or even sexual). The bazaar again reinforces your longing or searching sated temporarily by the hotdogs. (Granted, if your date manages to eat a footlong without biting, I'd think she's a keeper, but that's beside the point.) Culminating in the vague panic you feel before you awake.

See? Old hat.

Oh, the werewolf?

The werewolf represents sharing.

From http://www.wordiq.com/dream/hurtful.html

Faceless

Interpretation: If you dream of kissing or desiring a faceless person, this dream represents your basic desire to be loved. In all other cases, dreaming of a faceless person suggests that something happened around the time of the dream that made you subconsciously decide not to get personal with people. It's possible that what happened to you was so hurtful that your mind is protecting you from having to "face" the memory.

Werewolf

Interpretation: To see a werewolf in your dream, indicates that something in your life is not what it seems. If you dream that you are a werewolf, it suggests that some aspects of your personality are hurtful to your own well-being. You may be headed down an undesirable path.

City

Interpretation: To see a city in your dream, signifies a sense of community and your social environment. To dream that you are in a deserted city, or that you feel alienated from the activity of the city, then it means that you feel rejectedby those around you. To see a city in ruins, suggests that you are neglecting your social relationships and allowing them to deteriorate.

New York City

Interpretation: If you dream of New York City, you are longing for more excitement, glamor and sophistication in your life. You may be bored with your current surroundings. If the city was deserted or you felt alienated from the people/activity of the city, this suggests that you feel rejected by those who are currently around you.

Bananas

Interpretation: Freud suggested that all such objects have phallic implications. However, all types of food bring up issues of nourishment. In the world of classic or superstition-based dream interpretations, eating bananas suggests a period of hard work but little reward. Spoiled fruit usually suggests "spoiled" situations or friendships.

I think the werewolf signifies your insecurity about the sales of your O'Reilly book. The "wolf book" is "astering Algorithms with Perl" and the "grey wolf book" is "JavaServer Page." Perhaps you subconciously fear that MySQL will never be as popular as Perl and JavaServer.

Likewise, the hot dog may symbolize the "dog book," "VB & VBA in a Nutshell," or the "pinscher dog book," "VBScript Pocket Reference," both of which cover very "hot" topics.

The Werewolf is the key to this one I think. Plus the fact that you walk through a door right after seeing him. Dimension doors are always attended by fearsome protectors.

I'd say you made a big decision lately (represented by the decision to NOT go to a dance with your date), and that decision has led you to the path leading to the doorway with the Werewolf. The Werewolf recognizes that you are wise enough to enter the house without interference. However, you're not sure of yourself. Maybe you didn't realize your recent decisions would change things so much.

You are being handed freedom, and are unsure if you should take it. Life is a tenuous balance between freedom/isolation and restriction/inclusion. Ponder the value of politeness in society.

Do I sound like a fortune cookie?
