With all due respect, I don't see where they stated their objection was to help poor people. I think it's pretty clear they sought to increase minority representation in Technology. As such, your sniping is without a basis.
Apparently, a "diversity" doesn't include caucasians.
Any time you claim you're trying to support "diversity" but aren't handing out the cash to *everyone* who needs it, you're not really supporting "diversity", but only a subset of those ideas.
Again, as I've always said, private institutions are free to do whatever they want with their money. (I'm a Libertarian at heart), but I wonder if someone had set up a scholarship fund "for white males only", would they get the same praise? Probably not...
